Most of the posts so far have been Riddims from Zimbabwe a genre that has taken the world by storm. This Music derived from Reggae Dancehall music originally from Jamaica is gaining momentum the world over creating a culture most similar to that of Jamaica the land where it all started from.It is the stronghold of Zimbabwean music as of now with its listeners consisting of both the young and old. It has taken almost 60 percent of Zimbabwean radio airplay.

Urban Grooves also featured on this blog is a pop music genre from Zimbabwe.Urban Grooves first became popular around the year 2000, when the government of Zimbabwe made a deliberate policy of promoting local arts by enforcing a 75% threshold for broadcasting local content on national media. This meant previously untapped talents of singers and producers immediately became household names as their music became widely played on the country’s television and radio stations, which were all government-owned. The bulk of these artists were youngsters whose music appealed across generations and social classes, posing an alternative to established local genres like sungura, jit and chimurenga. The youthful artists embraced various music styles, including internationally recognized forms such as hip-hop, R&B, reggae, dancehall, afro-house and kwaito.

It was around this time that the term “Urban Grooves” became attached to all types of music produced by upcoming artists across the country. The novelty of Urban Grooves became the artists’ use of local Shona and Ndebele languages, albeit colloquial.

The history of both genres makes it appeal to the young generation besides the fact that it touches on day to day living struggles and strives. It is the government's initiative, the aim to make talent flourish, as well as expressing social consciousness that has prompted the establishment of this blog therefore feel free to share your music, views and news on this blog.
